#1 Rankings Guaranteed
First off, the value in SEO is not all about keyword rankings. Plus, any true SEO professional would never guarantee #1 rankings in Google. Some SEO crooks will promise and even guarantee top results in the major search engines for any keyword you want!
SEO is about determining your business goals and marketing objectives, and how the success of your website will help you reach those goals and objectives.
Basing their entire SEO sales pitch on “#1 Rankings Guaranteed,” is a clear sign that the company does not fully understand SEO, or they are crooks looking to run off with your money. Most of these companies don’t even rank for anything themselves, so how are they going to help your website rank for anything?
We Submit your Website to the Top Search Engines
Either this company is trying to pull a fast one on you, or they are stuck in the 1900’s. A true SEO professional does not “submit” websites to search engines. The best way to get websites indexed is through true and proven SEO methods that put websites in the position to be crawled and indexed by the search engines naturally, not by manual submission.
Some companies won’t just stop at the top search engines either; they will go the “extra mile” and submit your site to “Over 200 Search Engines!” Wow, that has to be good right?
I do admit however, that I was guilty of this, but it was also many years ago when you could stuff 50 keywords in your meta tag and have success doing so.
First Page Google Rankings in X Days
This one is just flat out crazy and I’m not sure what the catch is. My guess is they start a pay-per-click campaign and say “see, there you are, #1.” Unfortunately, there are many people and companies out there that fall victim to this and actually believe that this is achievable.
We Work Closely with the Top Search Engines
This is also just nuts. We all wish we had personal contacts at Google that divulge all Google’s algorithm secrets with us, but it is just not the case. Do these companies actually think that people believe that they have these special connections where they can just contact the search engines directly and get your website personal attention?
We Have Reversed Engineered Google’s Algorithm
Now I know that there are some reputable companies out there that do have some crazy smart people that work on testing different strategies and how the search engines react. Some are generous enough to publish their findings. But there are also some companies out there who straight-up claim to have completely reverse engineered Google’s algorithms. I just don’t find this possible. These people are either lying, full of themselves or they might have figured out some black hat tactic that works really well for now.
Random Emails
If you own or manage a website, chances are you have received these emails and know exactly what I’m talking about. They send you an email stating that they have researched your site, found no inbound links and all sorts of problems with your website. Then they go into more snake oil SEO sales pitches of how they are going to do all of the previous I have mentioned for you in order to fix it.
Good SEO companies know the value of inbound marketing and practice it themselves. They rank well for keyphrases that send them good, relevant traffic that converts well and also have many other ways of customers “finding them,” not the companies finding you. If you are a true SEO professional, customers find you, not the other way around.

Great information. Submitting a site to 200 search engines still seems very prevalent out there and I am sure many people fall for this. Good tips. Very useful.

Yep, submitting to 200 search engines sounds good, and it’s not like it is bad, just not really necessary if you are doing good SEM. Good SEM work will invite the search engines to visit your site regularly and naturally.
But, if SEO is not your business, how would you know that that is a waste of money?

I think the easiest way to get this all sorted for most small businesses is to outsource to one of the many websites.
Get a list from a reliable source and get a few workers on it for you.
I always say to my clients that although I think that SEO and back-linking is essential, spend the effort (money and time) on the things you do better than anyone else! Dollar for dollar it wont be SEO!
